Emmaus is an international solidarity movement that was founded by Abbé Pierre in France in 1949. Nowadays Emmaus International consists of over 300 member organizations operating in 37 countries worldwide. Kudumbam has been a member of Emmaus International since 2000. Our association with Emmaus has contributed in enhancing activities in water conservation & water management, micro credit, eco tourism, right to education, right to health and in addressing issues of migrant workers. Mr. Oswal Quintal (director of Kudumbam) is currently a councillor of Emmaus International, and Mrs. Pangaivally John (Deputy Director of Kudumbam) is a member of Emmaus World Counsel Training a New Generation.
In 2000, Emmaus supported the construction of Vidivelli Children’s Home at Kolunji Ecological Farm, which now houses 20 children. More than 60 students have passed out from the children’s home, and several of them have continued with university studies.
Between 2005-2007, with support from Emmaus International we constructed and handed over 75 houses for tsunami victims in Nagapattinam District, coastal Tamil Nadu. At this time we also constructed one community centre at Tranquebar with support from Emmaus Arizo-Italy. At this
centre we are now running programs to empower rural women in the area.
