Lalitha - Babu

Lalitha and Babu, two fictional caracters, a young girl and boy, helps us to re-enact situations in real life. Lalitha – Babu project highlights the issues associated with child marriage including rights, gender, equality and justice to young girls and boys.

India has the largest number of child brides in the world, according to UNICEF. Despite an 85-year-old ban, it is estimated that 47 % of Indian girls are married before their 18th birthday and, 18 % are married by 15. Patriarchy, class and caste influence the norms and expectations around the role of women and girls in India. In many communities’ restrictive norms limit girls to the role of daughter, wife and mother who are first seen as the property of her father and then of her husband.

Together with Save the Children Sweden, Kudumbam has trained ten Lalitha – Babu discussion leaders, to engage with communities to raise awareness of the issues of child rights. Anna Sandkull, visited Kudumbam to meet some of the discussion leaders and talk about futures plans about the project.
